Asoka’s poetic film on Pablo Neruda goes to Tokyo
Asoka Handagama’s newest film ‘Alborada’ or ‘Dawning of the Day’ has been invited be for the “international competition” at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF).
Set in Ceylon (1929) and is a fictionalized account of world renowned poet Pablo Neruda’s stay as the Chilean Consul in Sri Lanka. The film cast includes Luis J Romero, Anne Solene Hatte, Rithika Kodithuwakku, Malcolm Machado, Dominic Keller, Nimaya Harris, Thusitha Laknath, Kaushalya Mendis, Samantha Balasuriya, Kasun Perera and Kanchana Nandani.
This year’s theme of TIFF is the concept of Crossing Borders. “There are various types of borders in the world, such as communication disruptions due to COVID-19, gender discrimination, economic disparities and international conflicts. We wanted to show films that surmount such borders and go beyond that.” TIFF says.
The Tokiyo IFF will be opened with the World Premiere of Clint Eastwood’s latest film Cry Macho. Multi-award-winning French screen and stage actress Isabelle HUPPERT will chair the competition jury.
Alborada was shot amidst the pandemic situation in 2020.
Behind the screen art director is Vathees Varunan, makeup by Samarasiri Kandanage, costume by Piyathissa Akuranboda, colorist Dinindu Jagoda, visual effects by Chatra Weeraman, production designer is Bimal Dushmantha and music is by Ajith Kumarasiri-Namini Panchala. Director of photography is Channa Deshapriya, edited by Ravindra Guruge the film is produced by H. D. Premasiri. While Iranthi Abeysinghe is the line producer production manager of ‘AlboradA’ is Manjula Perera.
