Special security to be given for teachers reporting to work next week
View(s):The Education Ministry has planned to arrange special security for teachers reporting to schools which will re-open next week, a senior Ministry official said.
Since the Government is re-opening schools with less than 200 students first, they are providing security to teachers reporting to work as they fear that teachers who are striking will try to stop those who are reporting to work, the senior Ministry official said.
They said the Ministry has devised a plan to use the help of Police officers involved in the COVID control committees at schools in senior superintendent (SSP) Police divisions to provide security for the teachers.
Police Spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said if the Education Ministry requests security for teachers, they will deploy officers to provide security.
Meanwhile Ceylon Teachers’ Services Union General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said they are currently undecided of their next move, and they are not pleased with the outcome of the meeting they had with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“If we do not give up the strike there will be no teachers reporting to work, if such action is not taken there will be no teachers reporting to schools,” he said.
He said the Government does not need to fear for the security of teachers as teacher unions do not force teachers to protest or obstruct teachers who report to work.
