Focus on health workers’ mental well-being
To mark World Mental Health Day, and highlight the significance of mental health amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, a one-day workshop was organised at the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital under the guidance of its Mental Health Specialist, Dr Malsha de Silva.
A photo competition was hosted simultaneously for hospital staff to highlight their talent and captures.
Addressing the programme, Dr Malsha de Silva said that in the past two years, the health sector handled an enormous workload. They faced many challenges in controlling the virus, and directly faced consequences. This programme was launched to support health workers’ psychological well-being.
Dr de Silva said the photo exhibition was organised to help them take the focus off their busy lives, and also to try their hands in the art of photography.
During the workshop, experts in the field of Psychology provided comprehensive insights on the importance of mental health.
Central Community Health Services Specialist Dr Prabath Ranasinghe, Regional Health Services Director Sumith Manatunga, Specialist Psychiatrist Sameera Dissanayake, Director Nuwara Eliya General Hospital Dr Mahenda Seneviratne, and a number of invited guests were present. Nuwara Eliya General Hospital staff and officials from the Regional Health Service Offices were also present.
The winners of the photo competition were: Dr Upeka Karunaweera, Nuwara Eliya General Hospital; Dr Madura Seneviratne and Dr S Paravan of the Nuwara Eliya Health Services Office; and Dr Malsha de Silva, Specialist in Mental Health at the Nuwara Eliya General Hospital. The winners received certificates and prizes.
