The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union has warned Power Minister Gamini Lokuge of possible trade union action “without prior notice” if the Government goes ahead with the award of the LNG monopoly to a US-based company.

Union President Saumya Kumarawadu told the Sunday Times they had written to the minister, saying that the Government’s decision ran counter to the National Energy policy, violated procurement guidelines under the law and was a threat to national security.

Meanwhile, CEB Employees’ Union Convener Ranjan Jayalal also said trade union action would be taken “soon” and it would be “crippling”.

The picketing campaign last Wednesday was joined by members of the Jathika Sewaka Sangama, Samagi Sewaka Sangamaya, Lanka Viduli Sewaka Sangamaya, Sri Lanka Viduli Sewaka Sangamaya, and CEBEU. Ports Authority and Petroleum Corporation (CPC) union members also joined in.
