Gone with the rains; their home and all they had
A family of three in Kirimaduthenna, Passara who miraculously escaped death after torrential rains destroyed their home completely are seeking help to rebuild their lives.
Continuous rains had resulted in an earth slip that dragged down their house about 800 feet.
The owner of the house K.D. Lionel had been staying the night over at his shop and his wife and daughter had been visiting relatives at the time of the tragedy.
“My 14-year-old daughter and I had gone to Obbegoda,” said his wife Dammika Kusumalatha. I called my husband to wish him for his birthday. But his phone was switched off. Later he called back and told us of the tragedy. When we came the following day, we found only a pile of rubble where once stood our home”.
Her husband Lionel said it was a divine miracle that saved them although they lost everything they had.
His daughter 14-year-old Vihangi Uttara Jayamini is a Grade 8 student at Pelgahatenna Maha Vidyalaya, and she lamented that her books, uniforms and shoes were all destroyed.
A resident of the area B. G. Chanuka relating the incident said, “Around 7 p.m. in the night I heard a noise but I did not go out because of the heavy rain.
