Moratuwa and Colombo win
In the Women’s division, University of Colombo also had a great outing, to share 10 points out of 12 possible. Though University of Ruhuna led the points table till the fourth round, their loss against Sabaragamuwa University affected in a bad way.
The University of Colombo girls beat University of Jaffna (6-0), Sabaragamuwa University (4-2), University of Moratuwa (4-2), University of Kelaniya (3½-2½) and University of Sri Jayewardenepura (4½-1½) and lost to University of Ruhuna (2-4) to claim the title on a better tiebreaker. Sajini Balasuriya and Tiyumi Yashora had the best performance for University of Colombo scoring 5½ points each.
The University of Ruhuna girls’ team beat Uva Wellassa University (5-1), University of Peradeniya (4-2), University of Colombo (4-2), Eastern University (4-2) and Rajarata University (5-1), but lost to Sabaragamuwa University in the penultimate round (1-5), ruining their progressive attempt. Anjani Thilakaratne recorded the best score of 5½ points out of 6 games for University of Ruhuna.
University of Peradeniya beat Eastern University (6-0), University of Jaffna (5-1), University of Kelaniya (5-1), University of Colombo (4-2) and University of
Sri Jayewardenepura (4-2) and lost to University of Moratuwa (2-4), which turned off their hopes of winning the championship.
University of Sri Jayewardenepura was placed third in the Men’s division with 8 match points. They won four matches against Rajarata University (5½-½), Wayamba University (5-1), University of Ruhuna (3½-2½), University of Peradeniya (4-2) and lost to Sabaragamuwa University and University of Colombo (2½-3½).
University of Sri Jayewardenepura was placed third in the Men’s division while Sabaragamuwa University was placed third in the Women’s division.
The Sabaragamuwa University girls’ team scored 9 match points after beating Visual and Performing Arts University (6-0), Uva Wellassa University (5-1), University of Peradeniya (4-2), University of Ruhuna (5-1) and drew with Eastern University (3-3). But they lost to University of Colombo (2-4).
Due to the pandemic situation,
Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association (SLUSA) was not able to organise any sporting events for the University students. As a result, SLUSA decided to hold the three possible events, Chess, Taekwondo and Karate with special arrangements made to adhere to the health guidelines currently enacted in the country.
In result of the decision, University of Moratuwa organised the event on behalf of the Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association with the support of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka.
The Inter-University Online Chess Championships 2021 for girls and boys, was held on the ‘Tornelo’ platform according to the Swiss System in six rounds on November 6 and 7, using match points system. The event was held with the participation of 28 teams, 14 each from boys and girls, from 14 universities namely, Universities of Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa, Ruhuna, Jaffna, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, Rajarata, Wayamba, Vishual and Performing Arts, Uva Wellassa and one of the latest addition Vavuniya University.
