ATG Gloves workers protest demanding labour rights
View(s):Hundreds of workers of several trade unions staged a protest demonstration opposite the Wathupitiwala BOI zone entrance on Monday against ATG Gloves Knitting (Pvt) Ltd over the unjust dismissal of 16 employees in August this year, witnesses said.
Members of trade unions, representatives of political parties’ workers and women’s rights organisations, lawyers, factory workers from the Wathupitiwala and Katunayake Free Trade Zones, and people from the Wathupitiwala area participated in the protest carrying placards and chanting slogans, they disclosed.
It was organised by the Commercial and Industrial Workers Union (CIWU) against the unfair action taken by ATG Gloves, one of the oldest local and foreign joint ventures in the island set up 29 years ago in 1992.
A trade union leader told the Business Times that the reason for the dismissal of workers was an attempt to form a CIWU trade union branch at the factory to protect labour rights as several employees had to face many incidents of sexual and physical harassment.
ATG offices and factories located in Katunayake, Wathupitiwala and Koggala export promotion zones has expanded their operations with five factories exporting their products to over 35 countries.
However the company denied the allegations of labour relations of the company and factories, an official said adding that a few employees were dismissed after a disciplinary inquiry
ATG will continue to discuss with workers and employee representatives through the workers’ council and daily contacts on the shop floor creating a fair work environment for employees at all levels, he said.
