AHEAD provides Lankan researchers with access to patent databases
View(s):Sri Lankan researchers have been able to gain access into international commercial patent databases in the first phase of their respective research projects through the AHEAD programme, said AHEAD Lead Academic Head Thusitha Abeytunga.
“Such a facility is in need because it allows researchers to understand whether the topic of the research project has been covered at the beginning phase of their project, and therefore avoid any duplication and unnecessary patenting.”
Prof. Abeytunga said the common patent databases are expensive and due to the high cost Sri Lankan researchers from state universities are unable to access the databases.
Certain academics are unable to sustain their research projects and a continuous steady flow of funds are needed to bring the innovations to the market. Private companies are willing to invest in these inventions, and measures need to be put in place to bring economic benefits from the innovations put forward by universities, Prof. Abeytunga said.
Prof. Abeytunga said while all Sri Lankan state universities are engaged in research and innovation they did not have the support to protect their intellectual properties and to create partnerships with commercial partners. Under the AHEAD programme, the Education Ministry has provided the universities with University Business Linkage (UBL) cells that will fill this gap.
