Acting Indian High Commissioner Vinod K. Jacob has commended the work carried out by the Centre for Contemporary Indian Studies (CCIS) set up at the University of Colombo.

He said at the multidisciplinary research centre, both India and Sri Lanka have successfully conducted several programmes through an institutionalised network between the two countries.

Acting High Commissioner Jacob made these comments when he attended the 2021 Annual Research Symposium of University of Colombo recently. The theme of the symposium was ‘Impactful Research through an Interdisciplinary Approach.’ The session’s opening was attended by Foreign Minister G. L. Pieris, University of Colombo Vice Chancellor Chandrika N. Wijeyaratne.

Speaking as the Chief Guest for the occasion, Acting High Commissioner recalled the historic academic linkages between the two countries, including the visits of Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore to Sri Lanka.

He said the Indian High Commission has recently institutionalised a Gold Medal in the name of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore to recognise the highest academic record holder at the University of Colombo’s Sri Palee Campus. Highlighting the education reforms undertaken by the Indian Government in the last few years, including the New National Education Policy 2020, Mr Jacob said contemporary challenges require innovative solutions which could be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach.

In 2015 Indian Department of Science & Technology (DST) under its Cognitive Science Research Initiative developed a new research programme – Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation (SATYAM) which provides an interface with neuroscience, medicine, psychology, philosophy and so on as an interdisciplinary approach.

He mentioned that owing to its immense knowledge capital, strong interdisciplinary approach, vibrant start-up ecosystem and public-private partnerships, India has moved to rank 46 in the Global Innovation Index in 2021, a significant jump from rank 81 in 2015.

Recalling the robust bilateral cooperation in the areas of renewable energy, climate change, disaster management and sustainable development, he invited all scholars and academics to fully avail the opportunities put forward by both countries for the advancement of research and innovation and the betterment of society.
