Rs. 5,320 million allocated to upgrade schools to national level
View(s):The Finance Ministry has allocated Rs. 5,320 million for the programme to upgrade schools to national school level during the next year.
Accordingly, the opening of national schools which was suspended due to the COVID-19 situation will begin from January.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will open nine new national schools in nine districts including Siyambalanduwa Maha Vidyalaya in the Monaragala district.
Under the programme titled “the closest school – the popular school” 840 more schools will be upgraded to national level. This is in addition to the 323 existing national schools.
In total, the country will have 1213 national schools under the programme, in the hopes of reducing the demand to enter the well known national schools in the country.
The upgraded schools will have the same facilities enjoyed by the existing national schools. They will be under the control of the central government. Facilities will be made available for arts, science, commerce and technology subjects.
The schools are expected to increase the number of students to 3000 within three years. The allocations have been made to increase the facilities such as labs, play ground buildings and required staff.
The schools to be upgraded as national schools have been selected according to a criteria given by the Education Ministry. The Ministry will call for a report on the performance of the school to evaluate the activities of the schools.
