Gas for domestic use resumes; Govt. reverses decision

The Government has revised its decision to suspend the supply of gas for domestic use, 24 hours after ordering the dealers to stop selling it.

Despite an announcement that gas supply to the markets has been suspended, many dealers ignored the government ban and continued to sell gas yesterday.

Dealers said they were not informed to stop selling the cooking gas.

Consumer Protection State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna told the Sunday Times a blanket decision to stop the supply of gas to all sectors would be disastrous and that a decision was made to go slow on the process.

As such, he said fresh decisions had been made to withdraw the bad gas in the market gradually.

Accordingly, gas suppliers were granted permission to supply industrial gas yesterday, he said.

The State Minister said the focus in the supply chain would be in Colombo for now and would move to other areas gradually.

“It will be a step-by-step process until the bad gas is withdrawn. We cannot do everything at once,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, State Minister Alagiyawanna issued a communique, announcing the Government’s decision to suspend LP Gas supplies to consumers.

He said that no shipment would be released unless the ethyl mercapton concentration in the gas was 14%.

It is believed that most of the explosions could have been avoided if the gas was mixed with the right concentration of ethyl mercapton because it emanated a pungent smell.

Litro, however, claims that the ethyl mercapton concentration is being maintained at 14%.
