aculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) of General Sir John Kotelawala University (KDU) is one of the leading Post Graduate Institutions in Sri Lanka that conducts External Postgraduate Degrees for Commissioned Officers of the Tri Services, Officers of Sri Lanka Police as well as for the Executive Officers in the Public and Private Sector.
The majority of its courses are conducted during weekends for the convenience of the students to follow the courses without compromising their duties in their respective services.
The history of the faculty dates back to 2001 when it was first established as a Master’s section to offer the MSc in Defence Studies in Management for senior officers of the Tri-Services, Police, Public, and Private Sector. With the high demand for the Master’s degree programmes, the University introduced the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the year 2012. As we believe postgraduate degree is essential for a person to become an erudite professional in the field and it is a rare opportunity to obtain a prestigious degree qualification.
The FGS ensures personal and professional growth of participants through interactive sessions, experimental learning, and independent research projects.
The KDU is affliated to the University Grant Commission as well as to the most esteemed associations of higher education institutions and organizations around the globe such as “International Association of Universities (IAU)” and “The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)”.

Library Facilities
Candidates who are registered in KDU to follow postgraduate degrees have access to library facilities at KDU. The library enhances academic success by providing postgraduate students with access to high quality resources and services in aid of course work and research.
The prime role of the library is to provide a suitable learning environment and to facilitate a variety of resources in multiple disciplines/formats which enhance learning and research activities of the University.
The library possesses a collection covering a vast area of knowledge in the Medical, Engineering, Economics, Management, Law, Geography and History. At present the library collection encompasses a large number of books pertaining to various disciplines. The KDU library provides excellent services such as inter library loan service, book reversion facilities, and arrange membership in other libraries like British Council Library and American Centre Library and reference services for the betterment of the members.
Information Networks
Library provides subscription databases and information networks such as Individual society membership for Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (IEEE), Hinari Research Database, Britannica online Academic edition, Jstor Research Database – Trial version, Ebscohost, HELLIS– Health Literature Libraries and Information Services Network, and SLSTINET– Sri Lanka Scientific & Technical Information Net to facilitate research activities of the University.

 Dr Lakshika Liyanage (Programme Coordinator) (PhD (Durham, UK), MA (Durham, UK), BA (Hons) (Pdn) Dr Lakshika Liyanage currently serves as a director of the Centre for Gender Equity & Equality at KDU. Being a past FGS student as well as a staff member of same, she is very thankful about her career development and transformation she achieved. MSc in Disaster Risk Reduction and Development at KDU is the first ever post graduate level programme commenced in Sri Lanka related to disaster risk reduction. This programme started back in 2017 with the extensive support from University of York, UK in developing the curriculum and the field work component. We are now with the successful 5th batch of the programme. This programme is unique as it provides the MSc students theoretical, practical, field, and research exposure during the two years of the programme. Those who are willing to work together, to foster and support a socially engaged, intellectual environment that contributes concretely and substantively to the identification of and response to the social, political, economic, cultural, and environmental challenges and opportunities in Sri Lanka are highly encouraged to join with us in this unique programme. | |
 Lahiru S. Thilakarathna Attorney-at-Law (SCSL), LL.M (KDU), LLB (London), Reading for Ph.D. in Law, Head of Academics (GGS), Founder of tea(n)diplomacy, Director of Ni-Cey Group Mr Lahiru Thilakarathne is a law practitioner. He has advanced in his career academically. He highly speaks about the recognition of programms. The prestigious Master of Laws from KDU instilled me with a set of dynamic knowledge and skills which propelled my academic, professional, and entrepreneurial persuasions to international levels. The core modules, including international law, arbitration and trade, gave me great confidence to enter and manage many international businesses that I spearhead that now reach the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa and South Asia. Similarly, my LLM dissertation was presented to H.E the President, the former Prime Minister and the education minister as a recommendation paper to commence legal education for schoolchildren in Sri Lanka. Academically, I continue to pursue my PhD in Law and another Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies thanks to the recognition I received from my LLM.  Nilantha Sampath Akurugoda AIB (Sri Lanka), MSc –Mgt KDU, PG. Ex .Dip. In Bank Mgt ( IBSL), Dip. In Banking & Finance (IBSL), DCM (IBSL). Mr Nilantha Akurugoda, a well experienced banker, the winner of Best Overall Performance Award in Management Award in year 2020. The very first day that I stepped into the university, the friendly environment and the state-of-the-art nature of the university, its staff and the outcome of my interview helped me broaden my understanding that it was the right place for my further education. The degree programms of KDU are conducted by well experienced panel of lecturers who are industry experts in their relevant subjects/domains. I have been privileged to associate both civil and military officers who are experts and professionals in their respective domains/fields. My Degree with KDU was indeed a very successful and an enjoyable experience where I could gain a wealth of knowledge and skills from expert panel of lecturers and in turn been awarded the “Best Overall Performance Award in Management” in year 2020. With the above, I can vouch KDU as the best university in Sri Lanka for anyone to engage in further academic activities.
