Pawani Attanayake does it all and marks a new chapter with the opening of Cakealicious by Pinky at OGF
The Beginning
“My mum used to bake for every occasion and for everyone’s birthdays. Eventually, I took over and became the baker at home when I was about 13yrs.
My friends and family loved my cakes because of my commitment to the perfect sponge! I took pride that my cakes had to be perfectly moist and with the perfect texture. This is still the rule, but of course the recipe has improved since I was 13!” the vibrant baker said with a smile
From a Passion to a Business
“I started the business ‘Cakelicious with Pinky’ during the lockdown. I wanted a cake for my sons first birthday and didn’t want to risk ordering from out. This resulted in a two-tiered teddy bear cake. Everyone loved it, and so I started my Instagram page.
I didn’t promote the page, but within a week received inquiries. My first order was for cupcakes. Within about two weeks got an order for a Harry Potter cake. I got really good reviews and that was the beginning.”
The driven young lady didn’t stop there. “I have always loved teaching, and therefore having a workshop was the next natural step!” Pawani who is fondly known as Pinky, explained that she enjoys teaching everyone how to make her delicious cakes, along with tips and tricks that make the cakes fool proof!
“We learnt important tips to make the perfect cake!” stated the happy Krithika, a student from one of the last workshops.”
The Influence of being a Professional
In an era when home bakers are booming and Instagram shops pop up overnight, Pinky has a secret that makes her stand out. She explained that the balance between the perfect product, the discipline behind the operation and meeting the customers needs is the key.
“My last job was as the head of marketing at Million Spaces. It was a startup and I had to learn how to market something new. This experience was invaluable when it came to starting Cakealicious. Similarly, as a professional, my experience with dealing with people and my communication skills have been a great help. I am used to handling marketing material for companies, so this was a great help when starting my own business.”
Family – the Strength behind Cakealicious
“Even during the worst times, my husband was my biggest supporter. He is currently the head of marketing at a reputed private university.
However, he always found the time to support me as needed! My mother is the other half of my support system, and looks after my 2 years old while I bake. My baby also gets very excited and wants to get involved. He helps with chores such as lining cup cake tins and passing eggs” Pinky said with fondness.

Another personal favourite is Vanilla blueberry. This buttery soft cake is encompassed in Italian meringue butter cream with blueberry compote.”
