Permanent appointments for 51,000 graduates from January
View(s):Confirmation process for grad students currently undergoing training has begun
Granting permanent appointments to 51,000 unemployed graduates would begin on January 03, next year, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said recently. The Minister is the Chairman of the Cabinet sub-committee appointed to look into matters pertaining to recently recruited graduates to public sector institutes.
He said the Cabinet has granted approval for this placement.
He said this initiative is being implemented in line with the concept of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to employ youth emerging from higher education institutions enabled through the free education system.
Accordingly, the 51,000 unemployed graduates who are currently undergoing training will be appointed as development officers on January 03, next year and the service of approximately 42,500 graduates who completed the one-year training programme will be confirmed on the same day. Those who were recruited for the training in February and March this year, will be confirmed on April 1, next year after completing one year of training.
Minister Gunawardena also said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa submitted the relevant Cabinet Memorandum in February 2020 to employ the graduates. He said the decision of the current government to confirm 51,000 graduates in public service despite the economic hardships faced by the entire world, including Sri Lanka, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic is a step forward in line with the President’s vision of strengthening the youth of the country.
The total number of appointments made under the “Placement of Unemployed Graduates and Diploma Holders Programme” or “the confirmation of permanent employment of Graduates/Diploma Holders recruited in 2020 to the Public Service/Provincial Public Service Programme”, is 58,116.
However, at present, the number of trainees in the programme is 51,000. The recruits for this programme had to meet the required qualifications of any completed degree course recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), or an equivalent Diploma recognised by the UGC by December 31, 2020. The recruits are undergoing training under the divisional secretaries, various Government departments and ministries and the Provincial councils.
The Education Ministry said there is a possibility of providing 22,000 appointments to teachers. As the first step the 51,000 trainees would be made permanent in the public service, Minister Gunawardena said.
He also said those who wish to join the teaching profession, and are either currently being trained in the field of education or not so, will be given the opportunity to apply and join the teaching service in accordance with the Teacher Service Act.
The process required for the confirmation of graduates who are currently undergoing training has begun and the Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry, have sent the required letter to the relevant Provincial council secretaries.
The Convener of the Officers’ Committee, appointed on the instructions of the Cabinet sub-committee, S. Aloka Bandara said the process coming under the Central Government has also begun simultaneously. Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon and Water Supply Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara were the other members of the Cabinet sub-committee. Public Service, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry Secretary J.J. Ratnasiri, is the Chairman of the Officers’ Committee.
