Devinda Kongahage’s internationally acclaimed maiden film direction ‘Bhawatharana’ is now being screened in Ridma circuit cinemas around the country.

Based on a historical story set during 1747 and 1760 during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, the film discussed about the political and social instability  that prevailed during the period and how similar situations have taken place throughout country’s history.  Narrating around a failed coup lead by the monks from the leading temples to kill the king Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, film travels between the history and the present times. Story narrates around Mathiyanpola, one of the Disawes who was in the forefront of the coup and later killed by king’s solders, the film is an interesting excavation into the history specially the Kandyan kingdom, the last kingdom that was taken over by the British.

“Bhawatharana is a film project that was delayed for many years. The delay was for many reasons but finally we managed to finish it and present it at the international festival and win awards,” said Devinda speaking about the film.

The main roles of the film are played by Malani Fonseka, Sriyantha Mendis, Mahendra Perera, Udayanthi Kulatunga, Roshan Pilapitiya, Chadika Nanayakkara, Kumudu Nishantha,

Srimal Wedisinghe, Kanchana Kodituwakku, Sanketh Wickremege, Dharshan Dharmaraj, Chithra Warakagoda, Deepani Silva, Richard Manamudali and the film introduces Sajeew Kashthreeya Rajaputhra to cinema. The film was awarded the Best Film at the Dilhi International Film Festical in 2015 and it was also ranked the Best Film at the 2018 Golden Kite Film Festival in China.

Camera directed by Nishantha Pradeep, editing and colour grading by Praveen Jayaratne, make up by Narada Dhananji Thotagamuwa and Premalal Liyanage, art direction is by Manoj Wickremesinghe and Chindthaka Wijerathna. Sound recordist is Kalinga Gihan Perera and music director is Navaratne Gamage. Musician Jagath Wickremesinghe did the composition and playback singing.

Kasthriya Films and Rajaputhra Production Shirani Keppetipola and S. R. Wijseinghe produced ‘Bhawatharana’.
