Nat. Education Colleges should be handed back to Ministry: Lanka School Principals Association
View(s):A shortage of teachers if the national colleges of education used as COVID-19 treatment centres are re-assigned to the Education Ministry, the Lanka School Principals Association warns.
The School Principals Association Secretary Piyasiri Fernando said if these education colleges are returned to the Education Ministry and teacher training resumes, this shortage will take place.
He also pointed out that many teachers have completed their retirement age and are waiting to be retired. Therefore the national colleges of education need to resume their activities as they play a key role in producing teachers for the country.
Mr. Fernando said 18 national colleges of education have been turned into COVID-19 treatment centres for nearly two years, therefore students’ and teachers’ belongings and state properties have been destroyed as result of the move.
He also said these national colleges of education are not in a state where they could be opened soon.
Mr. Fernando therefore proposed for the national colleges of education to be re-assigned under the ministry. Following that damages should be repaired and teacher training resumed by taking in new batches of student teachers. He said there are trainee graduate teachers attached to schools who would be made permanent staff in the future.
