Driver killed at Wanawasala rail crossing after car collides with train
View(s):One person was killed when the Kankesanthurai-Colombo train collided with a car at the level crossing at Wanawasala in Kelaniya last afternoon.
The incident occurred at the level crossing next to the Wanawasala Railway Station. The deceased victim was the driver of the car. He was identified as a 55-year-old engineer residing at Hunupitiya in Wattala.
The car had burst into flames after colliding with the train and being dragged some distance along the track. The collision and the subsequent fire also caused damage to the train and the rail track. Area residents however, managed to douse the fire before it spread further.
The level crossing does not have a gate but has a warning bell and light system. the Police said the system had been in operation at the time of the collision and investigations are ongoing.
