Kandy MC general meeting disrupted: One councillor assaulted
Kandy Mayor Kesara Senanayake had to abandon the general meeting of the municipal council half way, when Councilor Dhammika Perera questioned whether the municipal ordinance includes a position called “Leader of the Opposition.”
When this question was raised the Mayor called for a recess.
After the recess, councillor Dhammika Perera said he was on his feet and then the
meeting was called off. He asked the same question again about the legality of the position of Opposition Leader in the Council.
Mayor Kesara Senanayake said this position was in the Council for many years, but Dhammika Perera was not satisfied with the explanation. He said the present Leader of the Opposition should give back the vehicle he has been issued.
During the tense situation that took place afterwards, councillor Dhammika Perera was allegedly assaulted by another council member.
The Council members eventually walked out and there was no quorum to continue the meeting.
