NIE Director says new school syllabuses will be introduced next year
View(s):The National Institute of Education (NIE) has prepared new syllabuses for schools to be implemented from next year onwards, a senior official of the institute said.
NIE Director General Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne said the syllabuses will be tested for the first time in 200 selected national and provincial schools from this year onwards.
He said teachers and principals have already been trained regarding the new syllabuses.
“The test-period would be used to identify areas which need to be improved further, before it is introduced to schools from next year,” he said.
Under the first phase the syllabuses will be introduced for grades one, two, six, eight and ten from 2023 onwards, while the second phase to be implemented in the following year will be for the remaining grades of three, five, seven, nine and 11 grades.
The syllabuses are being changed under the National Education Reforms Programmme on a directive of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
He said the objective of the change of the syllabuses to cover several new areas which had not been covered under the previous syllabuses.
“Students will be given the opportunity to do their own research and study,” he said.
He said the examination system will be changed and students, instead of having two term tests, will be facing only one test.
However, the test will provide only an aggregate of 30 marks and the balance 70 marks will be made from point scored during a continuous assessment scheme.
“Instead of text books, modules will be introduced for students to get used to more practical work,” he added.
Under the marking scheme students will gain points for attendance in class rooms.
