No gas, no firewood, no hot water for Nuwara Eliya residents
View(s):Some in N’Eliya turn to electricity due to cooking gas shortage, but poorer residents unable to make the switch due to high cost
The prevailing gas shortage has caused immense hardship for people in the country. For those in Nuwara Eliya however, the situation is worse than other places.
The climate in Nuwara Eliya these days is bitterly cold, requiring many households to use hot water for day-to-day activities. Many residents here have been using gas to heat their water for years.
However, the gas shortage has caused turmoil in the daily lives of Nuwara Eliya residents. Many had to brave the intensely cold weather to queue up for gas from morning till night, often without success, since there was no proper mechanism to supply firewood for the residents. In the absence of gas and firewood, many had to turn to electricity to heat water. But poorer residents found this difficult as it sent their electricity bills skyrocketing.
Among those suffering heavily were housewives, who had to get their children ready for school in the cold weather. Meanwhile, small business owners who supplied food to restaurants were also undergoing immense hardship due to the unavailability of gas.
