Sri Lanka Model United Nations, is a platform where youth mentality in leadership, negotiation, and diplomacy is identified, nurtured & developed in line with building a stronger and peaceful future for mankind worldwide. Being founded by some of the individuals who serve, as the very people who’ve represented Model United Nations across the globe it aims to engage youth leaders from across the globe and provide a platform to share perspectives and opinions in solving detrimental issues with no regional boundary.

Having set foot in international platforms across the world, the founders of SLMUN plan to bring forward a revolution to the Model United Nations movement in Sri Lanka by introducing most of the modern concepts of the MUN that are not currently present in the nation. Having identified potential talent across the island, SLMUN hopes to be the pinnacle of success to all aspiring MUNers from around the country and act as an incubator in order to jumpstart their career & help boost their soft skills along with problem-solving and negotiations.

Model United Nations conferences give students the unique opportunity to represent different countries in simulations of different real UN (and Non- UN) committees discussing and debating a vast array of pressing topics and finally drawing solutions to issues that plague our world, all within the structure of the United Nations and following its procedures.

Operating under the theme “Restless for change” the 14th Session of SLMUN strives to cultivate the next generation of thinkers and young leaders to be more aware and vocal of world issues that will impact them and their future.

To do this the 14th Session of SLMUN will engage the next generation to be proactive in the fields of both activism and volunteering, we believe that this effort will help transition the youth of this generation into informed and caring citizens of the world.

This year the conference includes 9 committees each addressing a topic of great significance in these pressing times;

This year in a surprising twist the First Committee of the General Assembly (GA1)which deals with disarmament and international security matters, the Third Committee of the General Assembly (GA3) which deals with human rights, humanitarian affairs and social matters and the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly (GA6)which deals primarily with legal matters and is the primary forum for the consideration of international law and other legal matters concerning the United Nations have combined to form the General Assembly Plenary. This year the chairs of the Plenary have picked“Discussing the evolving impacts of the Cyber Space on Human Rights in the Middle East” because it is one that draws from the three previous General Assemblies while still providing an opportunity to expound into other, new areas along the GAP mandate.

Delegates are expected to bring about nuances in accordance with their originally assigned committees while engaging with new ideas from other delegates. While a humanitarian focusis desired, the chairs also hope to have a technical debate that is grounded, relevant to the diverse environment of the Middle East and is solution-oriented

The World Health Assembly, or WHA, is the world’s highest health policy setting body. For this year’s conference the chairs of the WHA have selected the topic of“Enhancing the management and prevention of chronic diseases with special emphasis on degenerative diseases.”

The WHA chairs expect all delegates to have a thorough understanding of degenerative diseases and come up with new and innovative solutions on how to manage and prevent them in addition to the benefits and drawbacks of solutions that already exist in the management of the disease such as palliative care. Delegates should also debate the viability of certain treatments and search for ways in such treatments can be improved.

It is expected for all delegates to bring out and debate on controversial topics regarding chronic diseases such as euthanasia that will help make committee more interesting for all delegates.

Overall we hope the delegates address the above and more during conference and everyone has a great experience at SLMUN.

The United Nations Environment Programme, or UNEP, is responsible for coordinating responses to environmental issues within the United Nations system.

The conference topic of UNEP is “Discussing the viability of alternative waste disposal methods with special emphasis on industrial, radioactive, and agricultural and farming waste material.”Which stems from the growing mismanagement of waste from urban to industrial to agriculture et al.

The chairs of UNEP expect their delegates to not only focus on understanding the issue but analyzing innovative and diplomatic means to curb it. While policy making is a matter of experts, it is essential youth in particular take an active role in understanding the practicality and the application of policy. Especially in the case of environment related topic where there tends to be much awareness and forums, but, lack of solid action.

In the end, the chairs sincerely hope that delegates are able to not only achieve great heights in committee, but to also be inspired to create positive change in their communities. Last but not least, delegate should be given the space to have fun given that it’s a physical conference this time!

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, or ESCAP, promotes cooperation in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. Our conference topic is based upon “The crumbling institutions of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region and its effects on efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda.”

Delegates are expected to navigate the nuanced facets to this topic, drawing the links between how the growing shift towards autocratic regimes presents an alarming threat towards the fight against climate change and the need to maintain a fair and transparent justice system for instance.

Essentially, the chairs hope for the delegates to immerse themselves in the situation, thinking of creative and practical solutions in the pursuit of sustainable development while balancing the many moving parts in the global political machinery.

The ESCAP committee are excited to see the enthusiasm of delegates as they have productive sessions of debate, asserting their voices as the leaders of today.

The Security Council,or SC,has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. This year the chairs of the SC have picked “Reassessing the situation within the nation Afghanistan in light of recent developments”in reference to the ongoing afghan conflict that was given a new look after the sudden departure of the US from the region.

The chairs of the SC expect delegates to reassess the impact recent changes have had on the regional security as well as the global security while revisiting existing peacekeeping mechanisms and their efficacy in light of the shift in the balance of power.

A new addition to the SLMUN family is theInternational Cricket Council,or ICC,is the world governing body of cricket.

This year the chairs of the ICC have picked “Assessing actions to be undertaken in order to ensure equal playing conditions for batters and bowlers”to increase the scope of discussion during debate and come up with a feasible solution to many of the discussions happening today.

The Chairs of the International Cricket Council expect the delegates to be proactive and bring into the scope of debate many of the discussions happening around the cricketing world today regarding the rules and regulations of the game.

They are also looking forward to seeing the delegates bring into the equation the creation of equal playing conditions to further progress the game to mitigate any extremely unfair bias. Additionally, we also expect the delegates to bring in the discussion of the women’s game into debate.

All in all, we’re looking forward to a very engaging and entertaining two days of debate and the procurement of a feasible resolution that can be applicable in the modern day!

The United Nations Human Rights Council,or UNHRC,is a United Nations body whose mission is to promote and protect human rights around the world.

This year the council has chosen to push issues close to home with their conference topic of “Promoting accountability and human rights during the post conflict era of Sri Lanka”hopingto focus on something that’s related to our country itself and something that’s hardly ever talked about in conferences despite the importance of it.

The UNHRC chairs require their delegates to have in depth knowledge on not only what happened in the 30-year civil war but also what has changed in the past decade and what needs to be changed going forward in order to ensure that some level of accountability is maintained in Sri Lanka.

Finally, the International Press Corps, or IPC, consists of debate, research, and writing.

The young journalists will have the privilege of reporting on ongoing events of other committees in real-time. This year the journalists report from BBC, Al Jazeera, Kyodo News and Le Monde Diplomatique.

All in all, the entire Executive Committee looks forward to these exciting topics being discussed by the delegates on the 22nd and 23rdat the14th Session of SLMUN which will be the first physical conference in over 2 years.

Session XIV of SLMUN will be held on the 22nd and 23rd of January 2022 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo, Sri Lanka.
