Sri Lanka Under-19 girls lose all four games, conceding 28 goals at SAF Championship
View(s):The Sri Lanka Under-19 girls’ football team lost all their matches, conceding 28 goals and not scoring any to their tally, at the South Asian Federation Under-19 Championship played in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Their biggest defeat came from the hands of hosts Bangladesh, who scored as much as 12 goals against the Lankan lasses in the fourth and final games played. Bangladesh led the first half by four goals to nil, but unlike in the other three games, the Lankan lasses failed to defend in the second half.
As a result, the Bangladeshis totally dominated the second phase, adding eight more goals to their tally and finish on a high note with a total of 12 goals. Earlier Sri Lanka lost to Nepal, by 0-6. They lost to India by 0-5 and in the opening game against Bhutan, they suffered an identical defeat.
The Sri Lanka Under-19 girls’ football team left for Dhaka, Bangladesh on December 11 to take part in the South Asian Federation Under-19 Championship, played among five countries. The Sri Lankan contingent includes 23 players and nine officials while the captaincy had been handed over to W.M.K. Imesha of Visakha Vidyalaya.
Most of the players in the squad are from the outstations and Maliyadeva Girls’ School, Kurunegala has contributed with five out of the total of 23. Mahajana College, Jaffna has four players in the squad while three players from Bandiwewa Maha Vidyalaya, Jaffna have entered the squad.
Sri Lanka was not represented in the 2018 version of the tournament and the team appears at this regional competition after a lapse of three years.
