CEB reactivates emergency power purchases
View(s):The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), in the wake of a energy crisis triggered by a fuel shortage affecting the operation of thermal power plants, has decided to re-activate emergency power purchases from privately-owned plants as a temporary solution.
It has been decided to go for 300MW of emergency power purchases from the private sector soon to meet the current power crisis.
Accordingly, the Energy Ministry and the CEB will be holding talks with Asia Power in Sapugaskanda, ACE Power in Matara and Northern Power in Jaffna, a CEB official said.
In addition, discussions are also underway to buy 100MW from independent power
producers who will be submitting expressions of interest in accordance with the call of the CEB, he disclosed.
The Board will pay Rs. 36 rupees per unit to owners of private generators who generate their own electricity during peak hours in support of preventing power cuts.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has held discussions with public and private companies that own power generators to seek their assistance towards generation of electricity to relieve the CEB, he added.
The CEB is also exploring the possibility of connecting generators owned by state and private companies to the national grid, if the power shortage becomes uncontrollable.
