Galle to become tourism hub
View(s):The Government on Wednesday unveiled plans to develop Sri Lanka’s Galle port, a UNESCO heritage site, as a tourism hub.
In this respect authorities will construct the breakwater, a cruise terminal among other facilities with the entire project value estimated at approximately US$175 million open for development through the Expression of Interest (EOI) and Request for Proposals (RFP) process.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will partner this project for which they have invited investors to submit proposals for the construction of the tourism hub in Galle that is strategically located in a heritage port city.
The Galle port will also carry out reclamation work to extend its area by a further 40 hectares, it was stated at the Galle Port Development Investor Symposium held in Colombo on Wednesday.
The project consists of 850 metre and 150 metre long two breakwaters; a 150 metre quay with the draft of 12.5 metre; and reclamation of land area of 40 hectares.
The project is said to open attractive investment opportunities for the private sector in the fields of leisure and real estate development connected with the Galle bay.
Investors raised a number of queries regarding the relocation of the cement factory in Galle and the establishment of a sea plane ferry service which are requirements for a tourism hub.
The environmental impact assessment is said to be still being carried out and queries were raised regarding the fact that this is a UNESCO heritage site and the conservation of the existing coral areas and wreck heritage next to the proposed cruise terminal.
