What’s baking? a maverick space for artists
As we head down a small lane in Pannipitiya, out waft music and the sounds of tinkering and welding. We go through an arch of thick violet blooms to a hive of activity. Here young men are busy carving up an arcadia of their own – a maverick space for artists.
The “Bakeriya Space” is in the throes of being born in what was an old bakery. A Bohemian artistes’ collective (Bakeriye Kattiya), the gallery cum theatre cum studio opens with an art exhibition by Kaputu Art’s Janith Weerasinghe, who junked his university career and followed his instincts, acquiring on the way reams of doodlings, a style all his own and original, if arcane, insights into life.
Titled Gebaka (“In a Womb”), his exhibition explores life from birth to death and what happens in between.
The eclectic line-up of events throughout February will be as follows. All events are free and open to all. The Bakeriya Space is located at 42/2 Mahalwarawa, Pannipitiya
