Paddy purchasing begins in Ampara; Govt. expects to buy 300,000 MT
Paddy purchasing for Maha season has begun in theAmpara district and the Government expects to purchase 300,000 metric tonnes of paddy accordingly, Paddy Marketing Board Chairman Neil de Alwis said.
The paddy procurement programme has been implemented island wide under the supervision of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Mr. Alwis said while participating in the paddy purchasing programme at the Samanthura Warehouse Complex in Amapara.
“We are purchasing a kilo of nadu for Rs. 92 and kilo of keerisamba for Rs.95. We are adding transport charges also to this cost,” he said.
The President and the Minister had instructed for the board to give money to the farmers immediately after purchasing the paddy and the programme had been made to obtain it expeditiously, Mr. Alwis added.
“I will report the progress of the paddy purchasing programme here, and this will be extended to Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Mullaitvu, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura and other paddy growing districts, including those in the North Western Provice, in the coming days,” he said.
In addition to the programme, Army personnel had been also deployed in the district to assist in any transportation problems that might arise during the paddy purchasing programme.
