Inter University Debating Competition 2022 organised by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon
View(s):The Inter University Debating Competition organised by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) was held on the 12th of February 2022 at the IChemC headquarters. Chemistry undergraduates representing universities from all over the island including University of Jaffna, University of Peradeniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Ruhuna, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and the College of Chemical Sciences, participated in the competition.
The event was graced by Prof. Srianthie Deraniyagala, President of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, and academics representing the participating universities. Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, chairperson of the Inter University Debate Committee delivered the welcome address. During the president’s speech, president of the IChemC, Prof. Srianthie Deraniyagala explained the activities at the tertiary and secondary level of education conducted by the IChemC. Degree programmes offered by the Institute of chemistry Ceylon, BSc (Hons) Chemical Science, GIC (Graduateship in Chemistry) and DLT (Diploma in Laboratory Technology) were also described during the speech.

The debates were held in two sessions where each team competed with all the other teams under the league method. Each session was chaired by a chairperson and judged by a panel of three judges. The competition comprised some thrilling exchanges of opinions and intellect as the young debaters battled it out with words, hoping to secure glory in the name of their alma mater.
In the end, the team representing the University of Jaffna emerged victorious having won all five debates that they participated in. The University of Peradeniya and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura claimed the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Certificates for winners and other participating teams were awarded by the Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences, Prof. Ramanee Wijesekera. The JNO Fernando Memorial Trophy and cash prizes for the winning teams will be awarded at the Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon in June 2022. Dr. Kushan Weerasiri delivered the vote of thanks to end the event.
The event would not have been possible if not for the dedication and commitment of the Inter University Debate Committee well-led by Dr. Kushan Weerasiri. The Inter University Debating Competition, which is organised by IChemC annually, aims to cultivate the essence of intellectual discussion through logical reasoning and creative argument, in aspiring young scientists, and continues to uncover the talents of undergraduates from all over the country.
