The highlights of Friday’s media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau chaired by Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawe.

Specialist in Emergency Medicine Dr. Ganaja Samarajeewa attached to the Kalutara General Hospital said:

Most COVID-19 patients come to hospital with other conditions and are diagnosed after a Rapid Antigen Test or RT-PCR. Others have classic symptoms such as fever, sore throat and cough and mainly complain of shortness of breath. Some of those having shortness of breath don’t have COVID pneumonia but some who also have other co-morbid conditions like diabetes or are elders do. Some have not taken the booster as well.

Healthcare workers are facing challenges because there is also rat fever, dengue and bacterial pneumonia.

However, the Health Ministry has improved Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and set up wards with isolation areas which are equipped with monitoring equipment.

There are around 25 Emergency Care Specialists in hospitals island-wide who have helped to relieve the pressure in ICUs, unlike during the Delta wave.

When critical patients are brought to hospital, the expertise of Emergency Care Specialists helps identify what the issue is quickly. This field of medicine was introduced in 2015.

Consultant Community Physician of the Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Anoja Dheerasin ghe:

So far 9,609 dengue patients have been reported for this year, with over 50% being detected from the Western Province. Of them, around 48% have been identified from the Colombo district.

Apart from the Western Province, a relatively higher number of cases have also been reported from Galle, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Puttalam, Ratnapura and Batticaloa districts.

If you have fever, as it could be COVID-19, dengue, influenza or rat fever, seek medical advice. Until a diagnosis is made by a doctor as to what it is, take only paracetamol.
