After a sold-out premier in January, Rajitha Dissanayake’s latest play ‘A Day in July
2019’ (2019 July Mase Dawasak) will return to the Lionel Wendt theatre on February 27, with shows at 3.30 pm and 7.00 pm.
The play revolves around certain events that take place on an ordinary day, in a year that defined a decade. Its first run was well received by audiences and critics alike, especially for its clever writing and subtle acting. The play has also been appreciated for addressing pressing socio-political issues as it examines the beginning of the myriad crises and dilemmas we face as a country and society today.
Rajitha Dissanayake ranks among the top original playwrights to emerge in Sri Lanka in the last 25 years. He has produced popular and award-winning plays like ‘Weeraya Merila’, ‘Sihina Horu Aran’, ‘Apahu Herenna Be’, ‘Bakamoona Veedi Basi’ and ‘Nethuwa Beri Minihek’. His scripts focus on burning socio-political issues and have drawn crowds, sparked debate, won awards and toured internationally.
The cast of ‘A Day in July 2019’ comprises seasoned stage and screen actors like Jayani Senanayake, Anuradha Mallawarachchi, Sampath Jayaweera, Prasadini Athapaththu, Sulochana Weerasinghe, Nalin Lusena, Gihan de Chickera and Anuk Fernando.
Music for the play is composed by Mahira Dissanayake, and the set is designed by Dharmapriya Dias and Anuradha Mallawarachchi. Make-up is by Priyantha Dissanayake, lighting design by Ranga Samarakoon and Anuradha Mallawarachchi and costume design by NalinLusena and Samadara Mabulage. Lenin Liyanage will be the stage manager.

Rs 2500, 2000, 1500, 1000 and 700 (balcony).
