Cops put Reds in shackles at Police Park
Sri Lanka Police put on a superlative performance from kick-off against CR&FC who had a bad day on the field due to repeated handling errors were comprehensively beaten 20-03 in week five of the Club Rugby League 2022 played at Police Park yesterday.
In the dawn of sixth minute of play the Reds gifted a penalty which was put over by Police SC flyhalf Yohan Peiris to make the score 3-0 in favor of Police Park, however an unforced error by the host handed over an easy penalty to Muthuthanthrige of the Longdon Place club to level the score in the thirteenth minute of play.
The Reds pack had very little to answer to the Police SC tight five who played a ferocious game of rugby broke the shackles as tight head prop Danushka Edirisooriya went over the line in the 25th minute for an unconverted try. The Police front row got into the game again 11 minutes later to score another unconverted try again from Hooker, Deshan Fernando.
At the short whistle Police SC were ahead 13-03.
Scrappy play marred with handling errors prevented CR&FC putting the finishing touches to add to the scoreboard. However, the cops who played a straightforward game of rugby, utilised a well organised cover defense changed gears in the second half to score yet again in the 54th minute as Vihanga Pivithuru touched down a goal that was converted by fly half Yohan Peiris.
In the dying minutes of play the CR&FC forwards due to a handling error fluffed a golden opportunity to drive through the Police SC try line to close play in a game that the Reds would like to forget in a hurry.
