No proper plans to provide fuel for school vans and buses or control COVID-19: CTU
View(s):The government has no proper plans to either ensure fuel supplies for school transportation or minimise the spread of COVID-19 in schools when the new term begins tomorrow, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said.
Around 4.3 million school students, 247, 000 school teachers and 16, 000 principals will be out from Monday when schools reopen. Yet with the prevailing fuel shortage, there is every likelihood that a significant number may be severely inconvenienced, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.
He said the government has not put in place a mechanism to prioritise fuel distribution to vehicles transporting school children or school staff.
Meanwhile, authorities have also not done enough to ensure that the spread of COVID-19 will be minimal once schools restart, he added.
Mr. Stalin said there was a significant increase in COVID infections among students and teachers just prior to schools being closed for the conducting of the GCE Advanced Level exams.
“What we have is the Education Ministry setting dates for the beginning of the new school term but the government has not done anything else to ensure that schools will function without disruption,” he alleged.
