Highlights of Health Promotion Bureau media briefing
Here are the highlights of Friday’s media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau chaired by Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawe.
Prof. Pujitha Wickramasinghe, Senior Professor in Paediatrics at the Colombo Medical Faculty:
Schools will reopen next week and there will be increased transportation. There will be a risk of increased disease transmission of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases such as diarrhoea and respiratory illnesses. Therefore, the public needs to take precautions.
Follow the guidelines to curb the spread of COVID-19 – washing hands and wearing face masks are a must.
Vaccination coverage among the eligible children over 12 years of age is increasing and we urge adults to get their boosters. Children over 16 years of age can get their 2nd dose and those who are over 12 years their 1st dose.
The Health Ministry’s Head of the School Health Office, Dr. T.M. Jayalath:
The vaccination programme against COVID-19 in schools within the Colombo Municipal Council is nearing conclusion. Twenty schools are due to be completed in the next 14 days. More than 50% of the children have been vaccinated. This percentage could be more since daily vaccination and even during the weekends, is taking place at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) for Children.
On Friday, around 98% of the eligible children got themselves vaccinated during the programme at St. Anthony’s Girls’ College, Colombo 3.
These figures vary as some children have gone to their hometowns for the vacation period. They may get the jab at the Family Health Bureau offices in their areas.
The vaccination programme has also been very successful in other main schools in Colombo.
