Ukranian fashion designer sets up 24/7 internet facility to help fellow Ukranians
View(s):Kate, a 27-year-old Ukrainian fashion designer working here and her partner have set up a “safe space” for fellow Ukrainians at a guest house run by her partner in Unawatuna. The place offers 24/7 internet facilities even amidst power cuts so that they can get information on their loved ones back home. The place has a generator and high speed fibre internet.
Kate is also anxious for her own family. Her home city of Kharkiv has been relentlessly bombed and attacked by Russian forces. “The centre of our city has been destroyed. The Mayor’s office and civilian administrative buildings have been bombed. It is very hard for me and it almost doesn’t feel real.
Her parents who are living in Kharkiv have now decided to leave. But her 90-year-old grandmother is too infirm to travel. She will stay with one of Kate’s aunts. As of Friday, Kate’s parents were still waiting for an evacuation train at the Kharkiv station.
She is amazed at how Ukrainians in Sri Lanka have banded together to help each other. She is also grateful to the help offered by Sri Lankans.
“We know the situation will get better and when it does, we willl remember how Sri Lankans helped us in our hour of need,” she said.
