Lyceum Wattala were even strong for their experienced counterparts from Nugegoda

The finalist schools of the Lyceum family, Lyceum International School, Wattala and Lyceum International School, Nugegoda played in the grand finals of the Inter-International Schools Under-19 Cricket T20 Tournament 2022 concluded at the Lyceum ground in Wattala last week. Lyceum Wattala won the toss, elected to bowl first and went on to beat their Nugegoda counterparts by 8 wickets to clinch the title.

Lyceum Nugegoda were bowled out for 106 in their allotted 20 overs. Significant contribution from the bat came from Duvindu Silva, who scored 35 runs for 31 balls and Karunyan Ponkovan, who scored 26 runs in 44 balls.

Rayan Perera grabbed four wickets conceding 24 runs and Garuka Sanketh claimed two wickets for 10 runs, spearheading the Lyceum Wattala bowling attack.

Lyceum Nugegoda emerged runners-up

Lyceum Wattala raced to victory by scoring 110 runs for loss of 2 wickets in 13.3 overs. Exceptional batting by Theekshan Abeyrathna, who scored 40 runs in just 34 balls was outstanding for the Wattala side, Sanujan Baskaran scored 31 runs off 30 balls and Lakshitha Udesh scored 26 runs off 15 balls.

Janithu Jayathilaka and Sethika Balasooriya claimed the two wickets to fall. Both schools from the Lyceum family advanced to the final after competing with other leading international schools of Sri Lanka during this tournament.

Lyceum Wattala claimed claimed all three individual awards on offer. Rayan Perera, who led the Lyceum Wattala bowling attack, claimed the Man of the Match award, as well as the award for the Best Bowler of the Tournament. Jaron Fernando was adjudged the Best Fielder.

In the consolation final played at the same venue, prior to the grand final, Gateway College, Colombo beat British School in Colombo by 30 runs. Gateway Colombo, after winning the toss and elected to bat and scored 160 for the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. Amanullah Ahamed stood out of the rest with an entertaining knock of 82 runs off just 63 balls, while Kavindu Warnakulasooriya scored 43 runs in 38 balls. Aaryan Amalean claimed two wickets, but conceded 30 runs.

Chasing 161 for victory, British School were kept at bay by the Gateway Colombo bowlers, and at the end of the allotted 20 overs they were restricted at 130 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Shehzad Raskothwala scored 28 runs, but he faced 41 balls in the process while Sashreek Vijaykumar hit 18 runs off 14 balls. Janindu Nandasena claimed three wickets conceding just 12 runs for Gateway Colombo.

Janindu Nandasena of Gateway Colombo was picked the Player of the Tournament for his continuous form as a bowler, while his team mate Amanulla Ahamed was adjudged the Man of the Consolation Final for his entertaining knock. Kavya Shuqla of British School claimed the award for the Best Batsman.
