Gateway offers the widest choices at OL and AL
View(s):In a brief span of twenty five years, Gateway College has become a household name in education. From Foundation to Graduation, Gateway provides the widest choices and numerous pathways for every learner to find fulfilment. During this journey, while fulfilling a void in the niche market, Gateway has taken education to the next level by combining state of the art facilities, up-to-date curricula, cutting edge technology and global best practices together with a wide-spectrum of sports, as well as clubs and societies, which contribute to the holistic development of the student.
Academics
In believing that schools should prepare students for the unique challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, Gateway continually develops and tunes curricula in alignment with international developments, and global and local market needs.
Gateway currently offers over 25 subjects at iGCSE ranging from English, Mathematics, Business, Sciences, Humanities, Fine Arts, Languages, Technology and Sport. At Advanced Level too, there are over 50 possible combinations through a mix of similar subjects and courses. Some of the courses assist students to obtain necessary credits to directly go into the second year of University. The newly introduced Australian Certificate in Secondary Education has further enhanced the school’s academic programme.
Vocational programmes
Gateway’s academic programme is strengthened further with the incorporation of vocational education into both timetabled subjects and afterschool programmes. O Level students are offered BTEC in Sport, BTEC in Music and Drama (LAMDA), as well as the opportunity to follow BTEC in Engineering after school hours. Drama (ATCL from the Trinity College London) and BTEC in Sport are also offered at Advanced Level.
Co-curricular Activities
In providing a holistic education, Gateway is proud of the many opportunities students have to engage in and develop a love for sport, benefiting from the life skills it teaches while gaining a competitive edge. Availability of sports such as Basketball, Football, Netball, Karate, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Rowing, Cricket, Chess and Squash supported by well-equipped sporting facilities strengthen the students’ physical development in keeping with the school’s vision of bringing up students who are healthy in both body and mind.
The child’s mind that is creative and active is further supported by the Clubs and Societies that Gateway has. Science, Art, Business, Debating, Model United Nations, Choir, French, Environmental Society, English Literary Association, Drama, Religious Societies, Interact, Sinhala, Media and Broadcasting, Community Service, Math, History, Geography and General Knowledge are but some of the activities that the school offers.
Being a group of schools, Gateway encourages students to move beyond their comfort zone and discover new skills and interests through ‘Inter Gateway’ activities where they include competitions in Digital Art, Essay writing, MUN, Debating, Athletics, e-Sports, etc. More recently, Gateway has had the support of a few institutional partners to take these competitions to new heights; the Dialog InnovoThon and the Gateway Oxford Math Olympiad which are conducted on a hybrid model using the experience gained during the pandemic.
Futuristic technology
Gateway has invested in ICT infrastructure that melds technology with the classroom environment, catering to students of all learning styles. All Gateway schools boast of infrastructure that includes state-of-the-art computer labs, educational software, interactive panels, and Wi-Fi access. Gateway schools are fully Wi-Fi-enabled with extensive bandwidth provided through dedicated, centrally filtered leased lines. Gateway’s own school-based management system, School Online (SOL), plays a major role in its administrative and academic efficiency.
Provision of Microsoft Office 365 and Minecraft licenses to all students, the school’s BYOD Policy, programmes on STEM, Innovation Studios, Robotics and AI and the recently introduced online assessment tool, Dugga are a few of the unique offerings at Gateway.
Performing arts
The arts are essential to life. They have the potential to shape and define who we are and how we understand ourselves and what we can be. We see dance, drama, music, and visual arts as fundamental to cultural engagement and personal development. Art and Design at IGCSE will provide 3 options to students from this year where they can take the subject as Fine Art, Graphic Communication (Digital Art) or Photography. The performing arts are given special significance at Gateway as a means for students to gain self-confidence and develop a deeper appreciation of literature.
Pastoral Care and Well-being
An integral component of life and learning at Gateway, pastoral care is part of our educational culture. All aspects of how we approach our students are considered – the way we treat them, talk to them, interact with them, and teach them – which contribute to the quality of our pastoral care.
We acknowledge that well-being is a critical precondition for learning and all aspects of well-being such as psychological, social, cognitive and physical are looked at carefully. The daily mindfulness programme, recitation of prayers from the four major religions of Sri Lanka and soft skills programmes offered at regular intervals focusing on important aspects such as grooming, digital safety, mental and reproductive health, contribute towards the well-being of Gateway students.
