Therefore, action should be taken to select a higher education institution that is internationally recognized and supports access to the local and foreign job markets to become an expert in the relevant field by obtaining qualifications not limited to a certificate.
Q: What is the importance of studying IT and Business Management and what is the demand for it in the modern job market?
Information technology is a subject that is evolving day by day.
The whole world has been paralyzed by the Covid 19 epidemic over the years, but all fields of information technology have been active. There is a shortage of IT graduates in Sri Lanka but it is not difficult for an IT student to find a job.
Proper management and administration are very important for any successful business. At present there is a shortage of manpower required for that. What exists today is not the business that existed 10 years ago. There are new business ventures in the world today that are integrated with technology. Opportunities for these businesses can be found in many local and foreign markets.
Dr. Gamini Wickremasinghe, the Founding Chairman of IIT, established the IIT in 1990 to encourage young people in Sri Lanka to pursue IT and business management. Over the past 30 years, our institute has played an outstanding role in implementing British degree programs in the fields of Information Technology and Business Management.
At present, more than 5,000 graduates of IIT around the world are engaged in various professions and live comfortable lives.
Q: What are the features of IIT as compared to other institutions of higher learning?
Teaching is done by a team of experts in the field as well as those already in the field, we develop the skills of all our undergraduate students to nurture confidence in any professional field.
Another unique feature of our degree programs is the compulsory one year job training offered by IIT. Students receive this practical training while studying for a degree. More than 200 multinational and local companies have provided the opportunity to learn about the essential skills needed for a successful career as well as the relevant industry. Through this one year job training you can have 100% confidence in getting a job after graduation.
We offer three degree programmes in Software Engineering, Computer Science at the University of Westminster, England and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the University of Robert Gordon in the field of Information Technology. We offer honours degree programs in Business Management, Business Information Systems, Business Management, and Business Data Analytics. All these degree programs include one year of job training with a period of 4 years of study. Depending on the needs of the students, it is possible to complete the first year of the degree in Sri Lanka and go abroad for the remaining academic years. Only students who have passed the Advanced Level under the stream of Mathematics will be admitted for the degree programs in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. Students who have passed A/L in any subject area can join our other degree programs.
Q: In addition to imparting subject knowledge, how does IIT work to enhance students’ creativity?
There are a number of external activities for students at IIT. The annual Stage Craft (Annual Talent Show) showcases students’ aesthetic talents to showcase their creative talents. The Cutting Edge exhibition showcases students’ latest concepts and innovations. We hold the Annual Careers Day at our institute, which gives young graduates the opportunity to receive in-service training at local and foreign companies. In addition, student associations such as the Rotract Club, Toastmasters, IEEE and WIE have been established to develop the skills of IIT students. In addition, IIT students play rugby, basketball, cricket and netball.
Q: Finally, what is your message to the students who are facing A / L this time?
