Sifting through the pieces
Clad in oversized jackets, gloves and hats, about 200 women from the fishing community in Sarakkuwa, Kepungoda coastal areas, close to where the X-Press Pearl ship disaster took place, are fully involved in removal of plastic pellets and other harmful materials washed ashore.
According to the Chairperson of Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Dharshani Lahandapura, the women are paid Rs 3,000 daily for their hard work to clean the beaches under the scorching sun rays.
“This is a way of empowering the women in the area. They are punctual, handworkers and now getting in the habit of maintaining a clean beach. This is a way of giving back to the community that was severely affected by the ship’s disaster,” she told the Sunday Times.
Ms Lahandapura said the women have been working close to 250 days and are efficiently sifting sand and removing micro-sized pellets, a difficult task under the hot sun.
