Relaying message through metaphor
An illusory collection of oils and watercolours steeped in surrealism and fantastical depictions was unveiled at the Barefoot Gallery Colombo on March 3. ‘Stories Recreated’, is the title of the gallery’s latest exhibition – the work of Indian painter and printmaker, Dushyant Patel in his debut solo exhibition in this country.
Having exhibited in Sri Lanka in 2019 in a group show which gained the attention of veteran photographer, Dominic Sansoni, Dushyant was offered the opportunity to exhibit his work at the Barefoot.
Based in Baroda, India, Dushyant’s interest in art emerged during childhood when he became captivated by powerful illustrations of deities, but what instilled his passion was a meeting with artist Bhanwar C. Pawar whose works inspired him. A product of Sheth C. N. College of Fine Arts, he received his Diploma in Painting before completing his postgraduate studies at the M. S. University of Baroda where he graduated with a Diploma in Printmaking. He credits each institution with bestowing him with ‘so much strength, exposure, knowledge and courage to become an artist’.
Exploring his complex ideas on the human being and relationships between men and women, the focal point of his incisive collection this time is the portrayal of different environmental issues. Picturing different species in an uncanny way he relays his message through metaphor. Works such as ‘Story Recreated II’ which depicts a raven perched on the handle of a glass jug of water while sipping the contents through a straw were conceptualised with fables from the Panchatantra (an ancient Indian collection of interrelated animal fables in Sanskrit), in mind. Inspired by artists such as Salvador Dali and David Hockney, Dushyant has produced a multitude of surreal, dreamscape-like works. “It gives freedom to dismantle the notion of the ideal way of depicting anything and hence helps me to create a high impact of the subject matter and symbolisms.”
Currently employed as a Graphic Art Tech. expert in the Department of Graphic Arts at his alma mater, Dushyant also has his own graphics studio, ‘Studio Vichitra’.
‘Studio Vichitra’ was established in 2016 with the added goal of assisting others, both emerging and seasoned artists alike to continue their aspirations with convenience. Not only does the studio provide artists practising all mediums with materials and equipment free of charge, it also hosts exhibitions of artists’ work to aid them in gaining financial support.
“I feel it a privilege being an artist,” says Dushyant, reflecting on how a career as an artist has enriched his life. “Being honest and true to the practice and oneself is the lesson I’ve learned as an artist.”
‘Stories Recreated’ is on at the Barefoot Gallery Colombo until March 20, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m – 6 p.m.
