The old stairway and wooden bridge leading to Halaba via Deegalla, Panakanniya in the Hali Ela Pradeshiya Sabha are in dilapidated conditions, residents of the area point out.

This was an old path used by village folk in Hali Ela, Deegalla, Panakanniya to reach Bogoda and Halba areas. Stating their grievances residents of the area said that the current situation has caused a great deal of inconvenience to them.

“This is an ancient pathway used by villagers to reach Bogoda from the Deegalla temple. Due to the current dilapidated condition a large number of people using this road have been inconvenienced,” Principal, Deegalla Maha Vidyalaya, D M P B Dissanayake said.

He said that half of the stairway had been renovated recently under a project by the Government, but those stairs are also now in a dilapidated condition.

Dhamma school children face great difficulty when they come to the temple via the stairway from Gamagedara, Deegalla, dhamma school teacher from Panakanniya, M Karunawathie said. She said it is even more dangerous to cross the wooden bridge over the waterfall near the temple, and added that the paths were slippery on rainy days.

The pathway is used daily by many people and no matter how much the authorities were told to repair this road, no one paid attention, farmer B Jayasundara said.  “The bridge and the stairway are about to collapse now. We request the relevant authorities to repair this road before any major accident occurs,” he said.

“The stairway and bridge are used by dayakas of our temple as well as dhamma school children,”  Chief Incumbent of Panakanniya Sri Sudarshanarama Temple Ven Medagama Vajirabuddhi Kashyapalankara Thero said.
