Scratching a Wound and Fogging the Sight
View(s):There are so many people who come to meet me early in the morning merely to talk about the bad side of the country. Furthermore, the moment you turn on the local news, yet again you will hear about the prevailing economic crisis in the country and the tough challenges the people have encountered in a very fearful manner. Moreover, browsing through the internet slaps you on your face with the same fearful news about the dreadful future the country has come upon. Even the SMS alerts you receive from the news providers are chaotic and highly detrimental to our minds. On top of all that, if you are connected to any groups on WhatsApp, all that you will receive these days are heartbreaking and alarming news on the present calamity of the country and how awful the future is going to be.
This situation reminds me of a game we used to play during our childhood known as “guti pandu”. Two teams chase and hit each other with hard rubber balls. There are times a member of one team might be surrounded by about ten members of the other team, he gets trapped and has no escape that he gets whacked from all around him. In such instances the only option available to that person is to run towards the enemy who has the ball, rather than running away from him. By running towards his opponent, he will get hit once but he will also receive the opportunity of getting the ball, as you are running towards it. Nevertheless, if you run away from the game, your opponent is sure to chase you and hit you until you drop to the floor.
I wholeheartedly agree that the situation is severe. What many of us do is that we unleash our ears and eyes to the same disastrous messages continuously all throughout the day, which is exactly similar to scratching an unhealed wound each and every day until it bleeds. Yes, if there is a wound, we must accept that we have a wound. The more you allow everybody to scratch the wound instead of medicating it, the wound will never heal. Moreover, it will not allow you to do what you have been doing for a living. This will be the exact consequence of scratching a wound on a daily basis. It makes the wound disastrous day by day and leads you towards death.
I have faced situations where I was unable to drive forward due to heavy fog, mist or snow that had completely blocked my sight. Similarly, when your mind is fogged you drop down to your weakest point, similar to the level of a vehicle which cannot move when its engine is broken. Just as a vehicle with damages in its body can move forward, so can humans move forward with physical distortions. If the mind or the central processing unit of a human being is paralysed, that person will certainly stagnate at one place without any progress. If he moves forward by two inches, he will slide back by ten inches as he is exposed to the energy of being pulled back and not the energy that pushes forward.
How many similar mind blurring fogs have you permitted to stop you from moving forward each day? If the fog is cumbersome then it is better to avoid that particular route rather than getting stuck in the road due to heavy fog. Listening to the news and watching disturbing videos on the internet will only swamp your mind. Apart from observing the fluctuation of the USD, I do not watch news nor do I listen to or watch videos on the internet with regard to the current crisis. Instead, I do all I could do to secure a stress-free mind so that I can focus on my business, especially in a context where every business in the country requires serious attention in this very volatile economic condition.
On a different perspective, imagine what would happen to a group of students, if their subject master looks at a past paper that he is about to discuss with the students and say “oh my God, I don’t know how to do this paper, this is so difficult and I can’t even think of any answers for these questions.” What a chaotic situation would it be for a student to realise that his teacher is incompetent and has no answers to the questions. That is exactly what happens to our children if we continue talking about the prevailing problem in front of them instead of discussing a solution. You may say, “well, what can I do about the dollar crisis?”, or “how can we solve the debt issue”.
Well, you may not be able to solve the dollar fluctuation or the debt issue but you could surely work a few extra hours to increase your revenue and cut down on your costs of leisure which will save some of your money. Similarly, if you could initiate something even on a small scale, maybe buying and selling a few attractive items or even selling second hand products, you can incorporate another line of revenue for your cash flow.
The issue arises when you cannot do anything at a point that your mind is paralised that it will certainly fall sick if you allow it to be struck with fearful messages on an hourly basis. You must definitely know what is happening around you, it is only then that you can construct a solid plan. If you are a parent, this is the right time to train your child to become solution seekers instead of problem broadcasters. To be honest, all we see on the internet today are channels that broadcast problems, none of them propose any solutions to the problem.
Today, a person came to me in the morning and started to talk about all the prevailing issues that are going to become worse in the future. When people start such conversations, I tell them that I do know that we have a wound and that it is a severe wound, hence I do not expect to hear it from everyone again and again. I tell them to suggest a remedy for the wound. If you take a look at your personal challenges, you can easily discover some creative avenues which will help you to survive during the storm. If you plant a mango seed you will be able to reap a mango fruit.
Similarly, if you constantly plant problems on a daily basis, you cannot expect your mind to produce solutions, as the only food you have been feeding it is problems. Get together with your children and discuss solutions that you all can implement as a family in order to overcome this turbulent time so that they will turn out to become solution seekers when they grow up instead of becoming problem broadcasters.
I am certainly not suggesting that you ignore the problem or be blind to the reality which you obviously cannot do, as you are already within the problem. What I intend to convey is that it is pointless to shout, “I’m sinking! I’m sinking!” Instead you must swim towards the shore. I am a CEO of Sri Lanka’s market leading Ayurvedic Cosmetics Brand, in this highly challenging condition in the market, I face numerous challenges daily.
Suppliers are increasing their prices daily. Yet, we cannot increase the prices of our products simultaneously on a daily basis. I have to seek solutions and act as a solution provider and that is why I do not want to fog my mind all the time with problems that I know already exist. There are no book rules for this type of situation where you are being attacked from different avenues, hence you need to create your own creative solutions. Therefore, let’s change our attitude towards this battle, as I believe that the existing approach that many citizens are attempting to take is not going to help them not their children.
