Reconstruction of Muruthana-Bamukuliya Road goes awry
Reconstruction of the 3.5km Muruthana-Bamukuliya Road by Consulting Engineers and Contractors (CEC), is estimated at Rs. 68,402,500.00, but people complain that the road has not been planned properly.
The road, which lies on the border of the Western Province, begins at the newly built Maha Oya Bridge at Kochchikade in Negombo, and is used by many motorists.
Western Province Provincial Road Development Authority (WPRDA) is supervising the project, which began in January last year.
Area residents said it took months to drill and fill either side of the road. They said their houses were still covered with cement dust, and their vehicles were damaged by the improperly levelled road.
They also said reconstructing this road was pointless without widening certain areas, widening the canal near the road and removing lamp posts that stood in the way.
They also feared the possibility of their houses being flooded during the rainy season, as the road was to be raised a few inches, and no drainage system was planned.
The project was to be completed by April 22 this year. Residents said construction workers were seen working even on Christmas day last year, but the work was improperly done and the road was not levelled properly. They said mounds of rubble and potholes could also be seen in certain places. WPRDA site engineer Damith Wimalasiri, who is in charge of the project, could not be contacted.
