The Peradeniya University’s Vice Chancellor M. D. Lamawansa discussed with the United States Ambassador Julie J. Chung, about a possible US collaboration with the university.

The discussion also centred on the progress of ongoing collaboration as well as possible future collaboration including research and academic collaboration and exchange especially in the fields of Arts and Culture, Engineering, Health, Management, and Agriculture.

Ms. Chung conveyed her greetings to the university and expressed her interest in consolidating strong collaborations with the university in the various fields discussed.

As the second half of the event, Prof. Arjuna Parakrama and Dr. Manoj Alawathukotuwa from the Faculty of Arts introduced the project “Preservation of Endangered Traditional & Indigenous Ritual Music & Dance Forms, Related Oral Expression and Craftsmanship That Cut Across the Ethnic Divide in Sri Lanka” funded by U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).

The US Ambassador officially launched the website of the project which highlights cultural practices and dance forms such as the Kohomba Kankariya, related oral expression and craftsmanship from the upcountry region, the North-Eastern Tamil Kuthu dance-dramas and related practices, Adivasi or Indigenous rituals and cultural activities, art forms from the relatively neglected areas of the Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa districts, and kolam dance-dramas from the Southern province.

The Ambassador was accompanied by Public Diplomacy Officer Kelly McCarthy and Political Officer Dan Monson. University of Peradeniya Deputy Vice Chancellor Terrence Madujith, Faculty deans and heads, postgraduate institute directors and the International Relations Office director took part in the discussions as well.
