Robotics is the synergistic culmination of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computers and intelligence, to make smart and efficient devices. Robotic systems can help various industries stay ahead of the competition, and improve our lifestyles. Hence, there is a great and increasing need for robotic systems as well as for engineers who can design and maintain them.

To meet this need, Monash University Malaysia introduced the Bachelor of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering (Honours) programme in 2019, as an enhancement to the Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours) programme. As part of the enhancement, students will further sub-specialise in either the Automation stream or the Artificial Intelligence (AI) stream, which will prepare them with the essential knowledge and skillsets to give their future organisation the competitive edge.

Students who successfully graduate from this course will be able to design and build robots, handle vast amounts of data from these robots, and make sense of those data in real-time to incorporate intelligence into the robots. They can ensure a fully automated manufacturing facility to operate safely and efficiently or a car to drive autonomously. They can also create planetary exploration rovers or robots for precision manufacturing or assist the elderly. Graduates from this course have found successful careers in multinational corporations, small-medium enterprises, and even start-ups, in various industries. In addition, students have displayed high levels of innovativeness, evidenced by their recent success at international competitions, where they won the Smart Grid Challenge at the Siemens Tech for Sustainability Challenge 2021, and emerged champions at the Shell Eco-marathon Autonomous Programming Competition 2021, just to name a few.

“For any industry to survive in this challenging climate, automation cannot be ignored. In fact, the Covid-19 pandemic has accentuated the need for automation and therefore robotics engineers will always be in high demand,” shared Professor Ir. Edwin Tan Chee Pin, Head of Mechatronics Engineering at Monash University Malaysia.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has a common first year, whereby students will learn the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry and experience a range of disciplines before deciding on a specialisation. They can specialise in Robotics and Mechatronics engineering in their second year. Students will also complete a 12-week work placement after their third year.

This degree is accredited by Engineers Australia and the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia. It is also recognised by the Washington Accord, which means that our graduates can work in any other signatory country without the need to requalify.

A Monash degree can offer you personal enrichment and enhanced career opportunities. Join our Virtual Open Day on 16 April 2022, from 11am – 4pm (Malaysian time) to explore our degree programs. More details at
