Welfare group wants freedom for zoo animals

Animal welfare activists have written to wildlife Minister C.B. Ratnayake raising concern about the well being of the animals at the zoo.

The letter signed by Justice for Animals and Nature president Dr Omalpe Sobhitha Thera says steps should be taken to improve the quality of life of the animals giving them the freedom to roam.

Some of the suggestions included relocating all zoo animals to the open areas in Ridiyagama and Pinnawala, converting the zoo land to a small urban jungle with indigenous plants and refraining from exchanging animals specific to Sri Lanka with other countries.

The letter pointed out that animals were forced to live in miserable conditions in the zoo for no crime of theirs.
