Before setting O/L question papers, verify schools have covered syllabuses: Teachers tell Ministry
View(s):With little more than a month left for the GCE Ordinary Level examinations, teachers have urged the authorities to verify whether the syllabuses have been covered before the question papers are set.
Their call came amidst reports that many schools have not covered the syllabuses due to shutdowns prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ceylon Teachers Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin said it was unfair to set the question papers on the assumption that all schools had covered the syllabuses of all subjects.
He said he had written to the Education Ministry, requesting it to carry out a study before the question papers were prepared for the exams scheduled to be held from May 23 to June 1.
“We are for holding the exams as scheduled, but we only ask the authorities to give some concessions if the syllabuses have not been covered,” Mr Stalin said.
Meanwhile, the Government has extended school hours till 2.30pm from tomorrow to enable schools to cover the syllabuses.
The extension applies to all grades.
However, teachers said the one-hour extension was not enough to cover the syllabuses for students who would sit the O/L exams next month.
They warned that longer hours could cause a strain on children’s mental capacity.
Moreover, most children will be deprived of food for long hours making it difficult for them to focus on studies.
