School vacation dates have been changed to accommodate exams and cover all three terms this year, Education Ministry Secretary Kapila Perera said.

Prof. Perera said the Education Ministry is determined to cover syllabuses during this year and conduct both Advanced Level and Scholarship examinations this year.

“This school year began on April 18 and will continue till December 23. The first term will continue till July 7 with a short break from May 23 to June 6 due to the 2021 O/L exams. Vacation for the first term will be given from July 7 till July 17,” he said.

Prof. Perera said there will be no school vacation in the month of August. The second term will continue from July 17 to October 14. Due to the 2022 A/L exams and Scholarship exams which will be held in October, the second term vacation will be given till November 15.

He said the third term in government and government approved schools will start on November 15 and continue till December 23.

Plans are ahead to conduct the 2022 O/L exams in the first ten days of next year. During previous years school vacations were given in April, August and December.

Prof. Perera said following requests from teachers, the Education Ministry halted its plan to extend school hours.

“Covering syllabuses in a short time is challenging. However, we will monitor schools on a weekly basis to check if syllabuses are covered as assured by teachers or else schools will be held on Saturdays as well,” he said.

Majority of teachers and principals reported sick on Monday and took part in the anti-government strike on Thursday.
