Royal stun STC
S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia failed to capitalise on precious free-throws in moments that mattered as they went down to their arch-rivals Royal College by 68-69 in the 17th Royal-Thomian Basketball encounter, played at the Sugathadasa indoor courts, on Friday.
The game in the fourth and the final quarter, paced exactly in that neck-to-neck, see-saw manner, until nerve-wrecking and pressure-filled free-throws by the Thomian player cost them dearly.
However, boys from the school by the sea were leading by a slender margin, courtesy to an ice-cool three-point. But pressure prevailed over the Thomians, conceding the games to their traditional rivals.
Midway through the final quarter, Thomians began to regain control of the game when they gained a slender lead.
In the deciding moments of the match, nerves and pressure was visible from both the sides prompting them to commit foul, however, even then, the other team failed to make the most.
Down to the final minutes, neither schools allowed each other as they were in a bid to beat other. The intensity only kept on peaking as the gap was only a matter of one-point.
Eventually, Royal had the final roar, edging their fierce rival by a point.
