CB says Govt. should maintain online education infrastructure

It is vital that the Government continues to maintain the online education infrastructure base initially developed during COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the existing disparities in the country’s existing education, the Central Bank’s annual report for 2021 said.

The report released this week also encouraged the state to assess the quality of online learning outcomes and make sure of access and free availability of these vital resources.

“The quality needs to be assessed as they are likely to be straddled by issues caused by the lack of physical interactions that are unique to those observed while engaging with teachers and peers in classroom and laboratory environments and in extracurricular activities,” it said.

The report requested relevant stakeholders to undertake proactive assessments of potential learning losses during the past two years and adopt focused and targeted measures to fill these learning gaps with the recent return of children to a regular physical school.

It also highlighted that learning gaps are likely to have lingering effects on learning outcomes which can result in significant gaps in skills, abilities and knowledge in children.

“Although the commitment of all relevant stakeholders to ensure the continuity of general education activities is highly commendable, especially the rapid transition of such activities to online platforms, it is important to duly recognise that such activities were likely to have exacerbated existing inequalities in learning outcomes, largely driven by disparities in access to technology-related infrastructure facilities and relevant literacy levels,” the Central Bank report said.
