Understanding the importance of human resource management and its complex nature department of management studies, now the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) designed a MBA in HRM, the effort that was initiated, lead and guided by the late Professor Sudantha Ranasingha.

The MBA in HRM is offered in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), the most recognized professional body that is well known in setting trends in the field of human resource management in the island. Therefore, this product is the outcome of collaboration between the academia and the practitioners of the industry.
The inauguration of this unique programme was taken place in 2010 and ten batches have been enrolled since the inauguration. The MBA offered by the FMS in collaboration with CIPM is unique due to several reasons; it paves the way for participants to obtain two qualifications through one programme; after successful completion of the prescribed core courses at the end of the first year a Post Graduate Diploma in HRM (PG Dip in HRM) is offered and the successful completion of the second-year courses, including the dissertation enables the participants to obtain MBA in HRM.
The MBA in HRM offered by the FMS, has been designed to provide the participants with appropriate set of skills in line with the core human resource management concepts, this is to optimize their awareness in managing the most important asset in any organisation, i.e., people. The MBA, to establish its uniqueness will effectively utilise both individual as well as group learning methodologies combined with field projects, case studies, seminars and workshops to disseminate knowledge to its participants. The dissertation which participants have to work on, in the second year will provide them the opportunity to show their competencies gained through the programme into a thesis, this work is closely supervised and guided by a senior academic. The web based platform (Moodie) is used to disseminate the information of the programme to its participants and the learner friendly methods utilised to deliver the MBA in HRM of the FMS in OUSL, provides a golden opportunity for the busy professionals of the modern day to obtain a MBA in HRM while maintaining their work-life balance.
