The predicament of being an MP
It was a celebration of more than three decades spent at the helm of the parliament – through pivotal years weathering so many fundamental changes – when Nihal Seneviratne launched his new book Memories of 33 Years in Parliament, amidst an eminent gathering on April 30, at the Foundation Institute.
Amidst the speakers for the evening, Dr Rohan Pethiyagoda picked up a deep-running vein in the book stating that “if young people protesting today were to read this book, they would understand the predicament that it is to be a member of parliament; how difficult it is…”
Dr Savitri Goonesekere called the book “a voice from a very different past; …not just a personal biography but… (with) historical and practical relevance in these dark times. The book provides important reflections on how parliament can, and should, conduct its business.”
Former speaker of the House, Karu Jayasuriya, added that Nihal “steered the parliament during very difficult and memorable days,” commending him on this book that celebrates “the good old, honourable days.”
The book is available at Sarasavi Bookshop.
